How to Create Your Own Custom GPT

In less than 10 minutes, I'll walk you step-by-step through setting up your own Custom GPT using ChatGPT

Setting up a custom GPT (often referred to as a GPT or AI assistant) can make your generative AI tool far more effective and efficient.

Because you train your custom GPT using your motions, contracts, relevant laws, court rules or whatever you want, the documents you create are tailored to your specific requirements.

For example, I created a Custom GPT to construct an entire estate plan with wills, a trust, powers of attorney, a healthcare directive, and even a document that outlines how the dispositive provisions of the trust flow. On this video I create a custom GPT to help me draft and analyze contracts.

These are just 2 examples of what a custom GPT can do. Some other ways to use CustomGPTs are to:

  • help analyze case details, identify relevant precedents, and suggest potential arguments or strategies

  • draft initial responses to common client inquiries, freeing up time for more complex matters

  • check documents for compliance with specific regulations or legal requirements

  • assist in organizing and prioritizing tasks, helping manage your workload more effectively

  • help maintain consistency in language and approach across different documents and cases within a firm

You can update your GPT to stay current, acting similar to a RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) database. And unlike a human assistant, your GPT is available 24/7. Just remember to always review and verify any output from AI systems to ensure accuracy and appropriateness.

Be sure to subscribe to AI for Lawyers — each Tuesday I share practical tips on incorporating technology into your law practice, and publish a new article each Thursday (and we never share your info).
